Most people laughed the first time they saw a GMC Syclone pull up to the starting line.
It was just a compact pickup with a V6 engine.
No big-block rumble. No giant hood scoop. No intimidating appearance.
Then the light turned green.
The turbocharger built boost, all four tires hooked up, and suddenly a little GMC pickup was leaving some serious muscle cars behind.
More than three decades later, the GMC Syclone remains one of the most legendary performance trucks ever built—not because it had the biggest engine, but because it completely changed what people thought a pickup truck could do.
This vintage street racing footage shows exactly why the GMC Syclone earned its reputation. Watch as the turbocharged AWD pickup repeatedly launches ahead of classic muscle cars before one determined big-block 1967 Chevelle finally begins reeling it in on the top end.
The Syclone's biggest advantage wasn't raw horsepower.

During the early 1990s, most high-performance street cars still relied on rear-wheel drive. Powerful V8 engines could produce incredible acceleration, but only if the rear tires could transfer that power to the pavement.

The result was a pickup that consistently shocked people who underestimated it.

The GMC Syclone still impresses me.
Not because it beat every car it raced—it didn't.
What made it special was that it forced people to rethink what made a vehicle fast.
Watching one launch is still entertaining today because the engineering is just as impressive now as it was in 1991.
Sometimes horsepower wins.
Sometimes traction wins.
The Syclone made sure nobody forgot that.
