How to Replace a Hummer H3 Starter Without Removing the Top of the Engine

If you've searched for how to replace the starter on a Hummer H3, you've probably seen procedures that have you taking apart the top of the engine just to get the starter out.

You don't have to do that.

The starter will come out from underneath the H3. The trick is knowing where to move it and how to rotate it through the available space.

I've done it, and in the video below I'll show you exactly how.

Hummer H3 Starter Removal From Below

Before beginning, disconnect the battery. The starter has a direct connection to the battery, so don't skip this step.

Raise the vehicle and support it safely before working underneath it.

Then:

1. Remove the left front tire.

2. Remove the left front wheelhouse.

3. Unplug the left front wheel sensor.

4. Remove the wires from the starter.

5. Remove the knock sensor.

6. Remove the ground cable from the engine block.

7. Loosen the wiring harness from its looms to give yourself additional working room.

8. Remove the starter mounting bolts.

9. Free the starter from the bellhousing.

Now comes the part that makes this method work.

How to Get the Hummer H3 Starter Out From Below

Once the starter is free from the bellhousing, slide it toward the front of the vehicle.

Then drop the starter vertically downward in front of the motor mount.

From there, rotate and tilt the starter as necessary until you can work it backward and underneath the frame.

That's the trick.

There's not a lot of extra room, but the starter will come out through the bottom without removing the entire top of the engine.

I recommend watching the removal portion before starting the job. Seeing the angle and orientation of the starter makes the process much easier to understand than trying to describe every movement in writing.

Installation is essentially the reverse of removal. Follow the process shown in the video to maneuver the replacement starter back into position.

The Bottom Line

You do not have to remove the entire top of the engine to replace the starter on a Hummer H3.

Remove the necessary components for access, free the starter from the bellhousing, move it forward, drop it vertically in front of the motor mount, then rotate and tilt it backward underneath the frame.

It takes a little maneuvering, but it comes out.
