A Wake-Up Call After 45 Years in the Trade

I’ve spent my whole life grinding, welding, sanding, and painting — the kind of work that gets in your blood, literally and figuratively. I thought I was fine. I thought I was bulletproof.
Then I couldn’t breathe.

After 45 years in the shop, I was diagnosed with asthma. That was my wake-up call. I’ve watched friends and coworkers push through the same coughs and wheezes I used to shrug off. A lot of them aren’t working anymore — and some aren’t around at all.

This post isn’t about fear. It’s about respect — for your lungs, your health, and the work itself. If you plan to stay in this trade, you’ve got to treat your lungs like your tools: maintain them, protect them, and don’t cheap out.

What I’m Changing in My Shop

I used to grab whatever dust mask was lying around. That stops now. Here’s what I’m using (and recommending) to anyone serious about staying in the trade long-term.

🫁 Respiratory Protection

1. 3M Half Facepiece Reusable Respirator (Model 6500 or 7500 Series)

Reliable, comfortable, and fits under most welding helmets or shields. 3M’s bayonet system makes swapping filters easy, and the seal quality is excellent.

2. 3M P100 Filter Cartridges (60926)

If you work with paint, clear, or anything solvent-based — P100s are your baseline. Filters out 99.97% of particulates and organic vapors.

3. GVS Elipse P100 Compact Mask

Lightweight and low-profile, perfect for grinding or tight-space sanding. Doesn’t fog up your eyewear and still offers full P100 protection.

💨 Shop Air & Filtration

4. VEVOR Portable Air Filtration System (800 CFM)

Strong flow, easy filter changes, and small enough to move between bays. I use this as a portable supplement to pull airborne dust and overspray out of the air.

5. Filter King MERV-8 16x32 Filters

If you’re building your own filtered intake or exhaust window setup (like I did), these filters keep the fine dust out of your lungs and your shop cleaner overall.

🔥 Full Mask & Air-Supplied Systems

6. Allegro 9210-01 Supplied Air System

If you’re painting regularly or spraying catalyzed materials, this is the real deal. It delivers clean air from outside the booth and keeps you isolated from fumes entirely. It’s an investment — but it’s the difference between working safely and gambling your lungs.

Habits That Make the Difference

  • Ventilate every job. Use exhaust fans and filtered intakes — even for short jobs.
  • Don’t reuse filters. Once they’re saturated or discolored, toss them.
  • Keep respirators sealed in a zip bag when not in use — dust in the mask defeats the purpose.
  • Clean your lungs like your tools: proper air, proper filters, proper discipline.

Final Thoughts

I’m lucky. Asthma could’ve been something worse. But it’s a reminder that none of us are untouchable — even after decades in the shop.

If you’re grinding, painting, or sanding every day, take this seriously. Protect your lungs now so you can still be doing what you love twenty years from now.

Next up — I’ll be showing the respirator setups and safety gear I’m switching to full-time. Stay tuned.
