“Don’t Prime Before Bodywork: Here’s Why I Still Do It the Old-School Way”

Why I Don’t Prime Before Bodywork (And You Shouldn’t Either)

I've been restoring cars and trucks for over 48 years. I’ve heard every debate in the book, and I’ve tested just about every new method out there. But when it comes to primer vs. bodywork order, the answer is simple:

Do the bodywork first. Period.

Here’s Why:

✅ You’re Locking in Flaws

Slapping epoxy primer over raw metal might look good in a hurry—but it hides the real shape of the panel. That means dents, highs, lows, and waves are all getting trapped under a seal coat instead of being corrected.

✅ Filler Bonds Best to Bare Steel

I don’t care what the product label says—body filler grips better to clean, prepped metal than it ever will over epoxy. You want that stuff to stay put for years? Bare metal is the way.

✅ You Can Actually See What You’re Doing

When you're shaping metal or feathering filler on a primed surface, you're working blind. On bare metal, every contour, ripple, or shadow shows clearly—and that makes a difference in the final finish.

🧰 My Go-To Tools Before Primer Hits the Panel

These are the tools I use to make sure the bodywork is right before I even think about spraying primer. If you want your work to last—grab the right tools:

🔥 Common Pushback I Hear (And Why It’s Wrong)

“But epoxy protects the metal!”
Sure it does—but you're not leaving bare steel out in the rain for a month. If you're working panel by panel in a controlled space, you're not going to have a rust problem if you're doing it right. Get the work right first, then seal it up.

💬 Final Thoughts

Look—I’m not here to chase trends. I’m here to get results. And after four decades of doing this on everything from show cars to family cruisers, I’m telling you straight:

Bodywork comes first. Always has. Always will.
