If you're building a classic car or truck, one question always comes up:
Should I run headers or exhaust manifolds?
The truth is, there isn't a single right answer. The best choice depends on how you plan to drive your vehicle, your budget, and what matters most to you.
Before we dive into the pros and cons, take a look at the engine from my latest C10 build and let me know which side you're on.
Let's look at the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Headers are designed to improve exhaust flow by giving each cylinder its own primary tube before merging into a collector. This improves scavenging, reduces backpressure, and can increase horsepower.
Increased horsepower and torque, especially at higher RPM.
Better exhaust scavenging for improved engine efficiency.
Lighter than most cast iron manifolds.
Available in a variety of designs for street, strip, and race applications.
Aggressive exhaust note that many enthusiasts love.
Easy to upgrade as engine power increases.
Typically more expensive than factory manifolds.
Can create clearance issues around steering shafts, starters, and suspension components.
More prone to exhaust leaks due to gaskets and flange movement.
Produce significantly more underhood heat.
Spark plug access can become more difficult.
May require periodic bolt tightening.
If maximum horsepower is your priority, headers are usually the clear winner.
Factory exhaust manifolds have come a long way over the years. While they generally don't flow as well as headers, they offer several advantages that make them an excellent choice for many street-driven classics.
Extremely reliable with very few exhaust leaks.
Excellent fitment in tight engine compartments.
Lower underhood temperatures.
Quieter operation.
Durable cast iron construction that can last for decades.
Easier installation in many applications.
Perfect for factory-correct and period-correct restorations.
Restrict airflow more than headers.
Slightly lower peak horsepower.
Heavier than tubular headers.
Fewer aftermarket options.
One thing that often gets overlooked is that some factory exhaust manifolds were actually engineered to perform.
Manufacturers like Chevrolet produced several high-performance castings that flowed surprisingly well while maintaining a factory appearance. Corvette "ram's horn" manifolds, high-performance big block castings, and other specialty designs have become highly sought-after pieces in the restoration world.
Many of these castings are collectible today.
Instead of hiding them behind aftermarket headers, they're worth displaying. They tell part of the vehicle's story, and many enthusiasts have never had the opportunity to see some of these rare factory performance manifolds in person.
For a factory-correct or period-correct build, those original components are every bit as much a part of the engine's character as the valve covers, air cleaner, or ignition system. They're a piece of automotive history.
For this Roadster Shop chassis C10 build, I chose factory-style cast iron manifolds.
The goal wasn't to build an all-out race truck. I wanted a dependable, traditional Gen 1 Small Block Chevy that looked like it belonged in the truck.
Everyone seems to run headers these days, and there's nothing wrong with that. They're proven performers.
But if you're looking for a factory appearance—or you simply want your build to stand apart from the next guy's—manifolds offer a lot of advantages.
They provide a cleaner, more original engine bay.
They reduce the chances of exhaust leaks.
They generate less underhood heat.
They generally fit better around steering components, starters, and suspension components.
They require very little maintenance once installed.
And perhaps most importantly, they preserve the character of the engine.
Sometimes being different isn't about adding more chrome or chasing another 10 horsepower.
Sometimes it's about building something that looks like it belongs there.
For this build, that mattered more than squeezing out every last bit of horsepower.

There's no question that headers generally make more power.
On a mild street small block, the gain may only be modest. On a high-performance engine with a larger camshaft, better cylinder heads, and a free-flowing exhaust system, the difference becomes much more noticeable.
But maximum horsepower isn't always the goal.
If you're building a cruiser, weekend driver, show truck, or traditional restoration, reliability, appearance, and ease of maintenance may outweigh the extra performance.
That's why there isn't a universal answer.
The right choice is the one that matches the purpose of your build.
Choose headers if your priorities are:
Maximum horsepower
Performance driving
Aggressive exhaust sound
Future engine upgrades
Choose manifolds if your priorities are:
Factory or period-correct appearance
Reliability
Better fitment
Lower maintenance
Lower underhood temperatures
Showing off original or rare factory castings
Building something a little different from the crowd
Neither choice is wrong.
The best exhaust system is the one that supports the vision for your build.
For this C10, that vision was a traditional Gen 1 Small Block Chevy with the timeless look of factory cast iron manifolds. It isn't the most common choice today, and that's exactly why I like it.
