Bare aluminum looks incredible when it's fresh.
Whether it's an alternator, A/C compressor, water pump, timing cover, or accessory bracket, that clean machined finish gives an engine compartment a professional appearance.
The problem is that it doesn't stay that way for long.
Once bare aluminum is exposed to air and moisture, it begins to oxidize. Over time that bright finish turns dull, chalky, and stained. The good news is there's a simple step you can take before final assembly that helps keep those parts looking great for years.
Aluminum naturally forms a thin layer of oxidation when it's exposed to the atmosphere. That layer actually protects the metal from corrosion, but it also changes the appearance.
On a freshly restored vehicle, that means the bright aluminum finish you worked so hard to create slowly loses its shine.
Heat, humidity, road grime, fingerprints, and engine compartment contaminants all speed up the process.
Before installing freshly cleaned aluminum parts, I apply two light coats of automotive clear coat.

The goal isn't to build a thick finish.
Instead, the clear creates a protective barrier that helps keep moisture, dirt, and contaminants away from the aluminum surface while preserving the freshly restored appearance.

For the best finish:
Thoroughly clean and degrease the aluminum first.
Apply light, even coats rather than one heavy coat.
Allow proper flash time between coats.
Let the clear fully cure before handling or installing the part.
Heavy coats can run or reduce the natural appearance of the aluminum. Two light coats are usually all that's needed.

Parts that require future machining, electrical grounding surfaces, gasket sealing areas, or threaded connections should be masked before spraying.
