Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses for Automotive Videos: Hands-Free POV Recording

Trying to film yourself working on a car creates an obvious problem: you need your hands to do the work.

I've used tripods, phones, action cameras and conventional video cameras for automotive content, and they all have their place. But there are times when setting up a camera gets in the way of actually doing the job—or the moment is gone before you can get the camera recording.

That's where I've found Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses surprisingly useful.

I use them to record hands-free POV automotive videos while working on cars, performing diagnostics, driving, attending automotive events and capturing things that happen unexpectedly.

They don't replace my other cameras. They solve a different problem:

They let me show you what I'm seeing while keeping both hands free.

See What the Meta Glasses Actually Record

Here's a nine-second POV clip I recorded while driving a Corvette Z06.

 

This is a good example of what makes the glasses useful. You're seeing the car essentially from my perspective without me holding a phone or setting up another camera.

Driving is only one way I use them. In the shop, that same first-person perspective becomes even more useful for repairs, tool demonstrations and automotive diagnostics.

Why Filming Automotive Work Can Be Difficult

Anyone who has tried recording themselves repairing a car knows the problem.

You position a camera where you think it can see the job. Then your arm blocks the shot.

You move the tripod.

Now the camera can't see the part.

You reposition everything again.

Then you realize the camera has a perfect view of the back of your hand instead of what you're trying to demonstrate.

Some automotive jobs are particularly difficult to film because you're working underneath a dashboard, inside an engine compartment, underneath the vehicle or in another confined area.

A traditional camera is looking at you doing the job.

A POV camera can show the job from your perspective.

That's a significant difference for instructional automotive content.

Using Ray-Ban Meta Glasses for Hands-Free Automotive POV Video

The biggest advantage of the Meta glasses for me isn't simply having another camera.

It's being able to record without holding one.

When I'm wearing them, the camera essentially follows where I point my head. That means I can continue using both hands while recording what I'm working on.

For jobs where I'm demonstrating a tool, removing a component, inspecting something or showing a particular detail, that first-person perspective can work extremely well.

The viewer gets much closer to seeing the job the way I see it.

There's no phone occupying one hand and no need to constantly stop the job to reposition a camera.

For someone producing hands-on automotive videos, that's a legitimate problem solver.

Meta Glasses Are Great for Automotive Diagnostic Videos

One of the best uses I've found for the Meta glasses is automotive diagnostics.

Filming a scan tool screen while you're actually using the scan tool can be surprisingly awkward.

With a conventional camera, I have to position it over my shoulder or arrange the scan tool so both the camera and I can see the display. Sometimes you end up working around the camera instead of concentrating on the diagnosis.

The Meta glasses solve that problem.

When I'm navigating a scan tool, looking at diagnostic trouble codes, checking live data or performing a diagnostic test, the glasses can record the screen from my point of view.

The viewer sees what I'm seeing.

That's particularly valuable for educational diagnostic videos because I can operate the scan tool normally while explaining what I'm looking at.

Instead of telling the viewer what's appearing on the scan tool, I can show exactly what I'm seeing while I'm seeing it.

For automotive diagnostic content, this may be one of the most useful applications I've found for the glasses.

Recording Automotive Repairs When You Need Both Hands

There are plenty of mechanical and fabrication jobs where holding a camera simply isn't an option.

Maybe I'm positioning a component.

Maybe I'm operating a tool.

Maybe I'm working underneath the vehicle.

Maybe I need one hand to hold something while the other operates the tool.

Those are exactly the situations where hands-free POV recording makes sense.

The Meta glasses allow me to capture footage while working normally instead of changing how I perform the job for the camera.

That distinction matters.

Good instructional automotive content should show how the job is actually done—not force the job to accommodate the camera.

Capturing Spontaneous Moments Before They're Gone

This is another advantage that I didn't fully appreciate until I started using the glasses.

Some of the best automotive moments aren't planned.

Something unexpected happens in the shop.

An unusual car drives by.

Something interesting happens at a car show.

You're walking through an automotive event and suddenly see something worth recording.

Normally, you have to reach for your phone, unlock it, open the camera and start recording.

Sometimes that's plenty fast.

Sometimes the moment is already over.

If I'm already wearing the Meta glasses, I can start recording almost immediately.

That makes them very good at capturing spontaneous moments.

They're not necessarily the camera I'd choose if I had five minutes to prepare the perfect shot.

But when I've got five seconds to get the shot or lose it completely, convenience matters more than having the technically best camera.

Where Meta Glasses Work Best for Automotive Content

After using them in real automotive situations, these are the applications where I think they make the most sense:

  • Automotive diagnostic videos

  • Scan tool demonstrations

  • Hands-on automotive repair tutorials

  • Tool demonstrations

  • Under-dash repairs

  • Engine compartment work

  • Vehicle inspections

  • Fabrication and shop work

  • First-person car walk-arounds

  • Car shows and automotive events

  • Quick POV driving footage

  • Behind-the-scenes shop content

  • Capturing unexpected automotive moments

They can also provide a second camera angle while another camera records the main shot.

That gives me another perspective to work with when editing a longer instructional video.

Can Ray-Ban Meta Glasses Replace an Action Camera or Phone?

No—and I don't think that's the right way to look at them.

If I'm producing a planned YouTube video, I still want conventional cameras.

A regular camera gives me much more control over framing, lighting, audio and composition. A mounted action camera is also a better choice when I need continuous footage from a fixed position.

The Meta glasses solve another problem:

What camera can I use when holding or setting up a camera interferes with what I'm doing?

That's where they make sense.

I think of them as another camera in my toolbox rather than a replacement for everything else.

What I Like About Using Meta Glasses in the Shop

The biggest advantage is that they don't interfere much with what I'm doing.

I'm wearing what essentially functions as a pair of glasses rather than strapping a traditional action camera to my head.

That makes it easy to transition between working normally and recording something worth showing.

I also like the natural first-person perspective.

For technical content, sometimes seeing exactly what the technician sees is more useful than watching the technician from six feet away.

That's especially true for diagnostics and detailed mechanical work.

And because the camera is already with me, I'm much more likely to capture footage that I otherwise wouldn't have recorded at all.

What You Need to Know Before Using Meta Glasses for POV Videos

They're useful, but they're not magic.

One of the first things you learn is that the camera follows your head, not your eyes.

I can look down at something with my eyes while my head remains pointed forward. The camera obviously doesn't know that.

So you develop some awareness of where your head is pointing when you're trying to show something.

Battery life and recording limitations also mean I wouldn't use them to continuously document an entire restoration project.

That's not what they're designed to do.

I use them selectively when POV footage adds something useful.

There's also the privacy issue that comes with any wearable camera. I stay conscious of when and where I'm recording, especially around other people.

Are Ray-Ban Meta Glasses Good for Automotive YouTube Videos?

For someone who occasionally takes a video of their car, they're probably unnecessary.

For an automotive creator regularly producing repair, diagnostic, tool and shop content, I think there's a much stronger case.

They solve several genuine production problems:

I can film when both hands are occupied.

I can show exactly what I'm seeing during automotive diagnostics.

I can capture first-person footage that's difficult to reproduce with a tripod.

I can capture spontaneous moments before they're gone.

And I can add a completely different POV camera angle to my automotive videos.

That's why they've become useful in my workflow.

Are Ray-Ban Meta Glasses Worth It for Automotive Content Creators?

For the way I use them, yes.

But the important part is why.

I'm not using Meta glasses because I think they're a replacement for a better camera.

I'm using them because they can get shots that are difficult, inconvenient or sometimes impossible to capture with my conventional camera setup.

If I've got time to set up the perfect shot, I'll use the camera that gives me the best result.

Automotive work doesn't always give you that opportunity.

Sometimes I'm underneath a dashboard trying to diagnose a problem.

Sometimes I'm demonstrating something that requires both hands.

Sometimes I'm looking at a scan tool screen that I want the viewer to see exactly as I see it.

And sometimes something happens unexpectedly and I have seconds to capture it.

That's where these glasses earn their place.

They're not always my best camera. But sometimes they're the only camera that gets the shot.
