Most people look at an off-road vehicle and notice the big tires, lifted suspension, or aggressive tread pattern.
What they don't always notice is one of the most important factors in off-road performance:
Suspension articulation.
Whether you're driving a vintage Ford Model T or a modern Jeep Wrangler, suspension articulation determines how well your tires stay in contact with the ground when the terrain gets uneven.
In the video below, we compare a Ford Model T and a Jeep climbing over an obstacle. At first glance, it's just a fun demonstration. But it also provides a perfect opportunity to explain one of the most important concepts in off-road vehicle design.
Suspension articulation is the amount of movement a vehicle's suspension allows between the wheels and the chassis.
As one wheel climbs over an obstacle, the opposite wheel needs to move in the opposite direction to keep all four tires in contact with the ground.
The more articulation a vehicle has, the better it can maintain traction over rocks, ruts, logs, and uneven terrain.
Traction isn't just about aggressive tires.
It's about keeping those tires firmly planted on the ground.
Every time a tire leaves the ground, you lose traction.
On pavement, that's usually not a problem.
Off road, it can mean the difference between driving through an obstacle and getting stuck.
A suspension with good articulation allows each wheel to move independently enough to follow the terrain instead of forcing the entire vehicle to tilt.
The result is:
Better traction
Improved vehicle stability
More control
Less wheel spin
Greater climbing ability
The Ford Model T wasn't designed as an off-road vehicle.
It was designed to travel the rough dirt roads that existed in the early 1900s.
At the time, paved roads were rare.
Ford engineers built the Model T with a lightweight chassis, generous ground clearance, and transverse leaf springs that allowed surprising wheel movement.
While primitive by today's standards, the design gave the Model T remarkable capability for the conditions it was built to handle.
That's one reason the Model T earned a reputation for going almost anywhere.
Modern Jeeps build on the same basic goal:
Keep the tires on the ground.
Today's suspension systems benefit from over a century of engineering improvements, including:
Longer suspension travel
Better shock absorbers
Flexible control arms
Locking differentials
Advanced traction systems
Combined, these improvements allow modern off-road vehicles to climb obstacles that would have challenged even the toughest early automobiles.
One of the easiest ways to understand articulation is simply to watch it happen.
As the Model T and Jeep drive over the obstacle, notice how each suspension reacts.
Watch how the wheels move independently and how each vehicle tries to keep its tires in contact with the ground.
Once you understand what you're seeing, you'll never watch an off-road vehicle the same way again.
Horsepower often gets the attention, but suspension articulation is one of the biggest reasons an off-road vehicle performs well when the pavement ends.
Whether it's a century-old Ford Model T or a modern Jeep, the goal remains the same:
Keep the tires on the ground.
That's where traction comes from.
And traction is what gets you home.
